The Wicked Will Rise

Publisher’s Synopsis: In this dark, high-octane sequel to the New York Times bestselling Dorothy Must Die, Amy Gumm must do everything in her power to kill Dorothy and free Oz.
To make Oz a free land again, Amy Gumm was given a mission: remove the Tin Woodman’s heart, steal the Scarecrow’s brain, take the Lion’s courage, and then Dorothy must die….
But Dorothy still lives. Now the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked has vanished, and mysterious Princess Ozma might be Amy’s only ally. As Amy learns the truth about her mission, she realizes that she’s only just scratched the surface of Oz’s past—and that Kansas, the home she couldn’t wait to leave behind, may also be in danger. In a place where the line between good and evil shifts with just a strong gust of wind, who can Amy trust—and who is really Wicked?

Excellent! Amy is still our hero, albeit a much darker version of herself than in Dorothy Must Die. She has fought, and lost loved ones and tapped into a magic so dark it threatens to consume her. She has managed to do the three things asked of her – take the Lion’s courage, cut out the Tin Woodsman’s heart and remove the Scarecrow’s brain. But Dorothy just won’t die!

One of this things I love about this series is how strong of a character Amy Gumm is. While this is a YA book, there isn’t much in the way of romance (just a little and I can deal with that). Amy is a warrior and while her internal dialog shows us that she is scared and unsure, she still does what needs to be done.

We have more characters in this book too. I’m trying very hard not to give away any major plot points, but we are introduced to Queen Lulu, the Queen of the Monkeys, and Polychrome, Queen of the Rainbows. Dorothy isn’t in this book very much, but you don’t miss her as there is still so much action going on.

There is a MAJOR PLOT TWIST at the end – so unexpected and I loved it!

The next book in this series should be released in 2017 and I can’t wait.
