For me, this was a completely accurate and amazing story about what it means to try to fit in, and what one might be willing to give up to do so. Horrifyingly close to the bone.
I don’t know of anyone who has not had a moment in their life when they wanted nothing more than to fit in. To be accepted. I’ve definitely had those moments. Years actually, and looking back it’s so clear to me what I gave up. Parts of myself. I stuffed down, cut off, and locked away who I really was in order to try to appear to be someone I wasn’t to people who didn’t really care at all. I wanted that approval and that acceptance and I cut away the pieces of me that weren’t what they wanted to see or hear. It was desperate and sad, and I want so much to go back in time and tell that younger version of me that they didn’t matter – the only thing that mattered was that it was ok to be me.
I am shocked that a story like this could hurt so much. It looks so fluffy and sweet on the outside, filled with razor blades on the inside. Well done.
